Why choose online counselling
Online video counselling brings the same depth and continuity as meeting in person, from wherever suits you: home, a quiet office, or anywhere private with a stable connection. Seeing one another over video allows facial expression and body language to remain part of the conversation, which some clients find helps the relationship feel closer.
It removes travel time entirely, which makes regular weekly sessions genuinely sustainable around work, caring responsibilities or a disability that makes travel difficult.
Who online counselling suits
It suits people who want the visual connection of face-to-face conversation without the practical demands of travelling to an in-person appointment, people balancing counselling around a full work or family schedule, and people who feel most comfortable talking from a familiar, private space of their own choosing.
Common questions
Online counselling, explained
What do I need for online counselling?
A smartphone, tablet or computer with a camera and microphone, a stable internet connection, and a quiet, private space where you won't be overheard or interrupted. I'll send joining details ahead of your first session.
How private does my room need to be?
You need somewhere you won't be overheard by other household members and won't be interrupted for the length of the session. A bedroom, parked car, or a room with a closed door all work well. Headphones can help if walls are thin.
What happens in my first online therapy session?
We start with an introductory chat about what's brought you here, how I work, confidentiality and its limits, and practical details like scheduling and payment. There's no pressure to share more than feels comfortable in that first conversation. It's as much about deciding whether it feels like a good fit as anything else.
Is online counselling as effective as in-person counselling?
Research and clinical experience both support online counselling as an effective format for talking therapy. What matters most, a trusting relationship, being properly listened to, and consistent regular sessions, transfers well to video.
What video platform do you use, and is it secure?
Sessions run on secure, encrypted video calling. Full details of the platform and how to join are provided when a session is booked.
What if my internet connection is unreliable?
If a video call drops or the connection is too poor to continue, we can switch to telephone for the remainder of the session, or I'll call you back to finish the conversation. A weak connection doesn't mean losing the session.
Can I have online counselling anywhere in the UK?
Yes. Online counselling is available UK-wide, wherever you have an internet connection. I'm based in Newcastle upon Tyne but work with clients across the whole of the UK.
Ready to talk it through?
Send me an email or give me a call and we'll find a time that works.
