A note on diagnosis
Ann supports emotional regulation as a counsellor, drawing on experience from school settings including work with young people with ADHD and autism. She does not diagnose ADHD, autism or any other condition. Diagnosis and specialist neurodevelopmental assessment sit with a GP, paediatrician or specialist NHS service, and counselling can sit alongside that process rather than replace it.
What emotional regulation difficulties can look like
Reactions that feel bigger than the situation seems to call for, emotions that build quickly and are hard to bring back down, or the opposite: feeling shut down, numb or disconnected. This can affect anyone, and is often, though not always, more pronounced where ADHD, autism, or difficult past experiences are part of the picture.
How Ann works with emotional regulation
Ann works integratively, mostly person-centred, meeting each person where they are. This can include CBT-informed techniques for noticing what triggers a strong reaction, and practical, visual, pen-and-paper tools, often particularly helpful for younger clients, or anyone who finds it easier to work with something in front of them rather than conversation alone. For adults, this can also draw on psychodynamic exploration of where a pattern of reacting may have come from.
Common questions
Emotional regulation support, explained
What is emotional regulation?
Emotional regulation is the ability to notice, understand and manage emotional responses, rather than being overwhelmed by them. Difficulties with it can show up as intense reactions that feel hard to control, emotions that build quickly, or feeling shut down and disconnected. It's a common focus in counselling for both adults and young people, and is especially relevant where ADHD, autism or past experiences make big feelings harder to manage.
Can counselling help with emotional regulation?
Yes. Counselling provides a confidential space to understand what triggers strong emotional responses and to build practical strategies for managing them, at a pace that suits you or your child.
What approach is used for emotional regulation in sessions?
Ann works integratively, mostly person-centred, drawing on techniques as they fit. This can include CBT-informed approaches for noticing what triggers a strong response, and practical, visual tools, particularly useful for younger clients or anyone who finds it easier to work with pen and paper than conversation alone.
Do you work with emotional regulation linked to ADHD or autism?
Ann has experience supporting young people with ADHD, autism and emotional regulation difficulties, drawn from her work as a school counsellor in mainstream and alternative provision settings. She offers counselling support around emotional regulation itself. She does not provide diagnosis or specialist neurodevelopmental assessment, which would sit with a GP, paediatrician or specialist service.
Is this support for adults or young people?
Both. Emotional regulation difficulties affect people of all ages, and sessions are tailored to whoever is attending: adults working through overwhelming reactions, or young people (from age 5) learning to understand and manage big feelings.
Can I access emotional regulation support online or by phone across the UK?
Yes. Sessions are available UK-wide by secure online video or telephone. £50 for a 1-hour session, £30 for a 30-minute session.
