FAQ

Questions, answered

If there's anything here I haven't covered, please just ask. No question is too small.

Are you a BACP-approved counsellor?

People sometimes use "BACP-approved counsellor" when searching for a counsellor whose professional status can be independently checked. My formal status is Registered Member MBACP, registration number 00988953, which you can verify directly on the BACP Register.

What's the difference between BACP Registered and BACP Accredited?

Registered membership confirms a counsellor meets BACP's training, ethical and professional standards and is listed on the public BACP Register. Accredited membership is a further, separate status requiring additional supervised clinical experience. I hold Registered Member MBACP status. You can check any counsellor's exact status on the BACP Register before booking.

What technology do I need for online sessions?

A smartphone, tablet or computer with a camera and microphone, and a quiet private space. If video isn't practical, telephone sessions work just as well.

Are sessions confidential?

Yes. Sessions are confidential within professional and legal limits. More about confidentiality and data protection will be provided at first contact.

How much do sessions cost?

£50 for a 1-hour session and £30 for a 30-minute session. 30-minute sessions are offered where appropriate, such as for younger children or those who may find it difficult to concentrate for a full hour. Payment method details are provided upon request.

Who do you work with?

Adults and young people from age 5. I specialise in anxiety, low mood, emotional regulation and personal growth.

Much of my work is with adults, including people referred through workplace occupational health, which I provide with Mind. I also have experience as a school counsellor in mainstream primary and secondary schools in the North East, and in an alternative provision secondary school, supporting young people with ADHD, autism and difficulties around emotional regulation.

How long will I need counselling for?

That varies from person to person. Sessions focus on understanding what's happening for you, building coping strategies and exploring longer-term change at a pace that feels safe, so we review together as we go rather than fixing a number in advance.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please give 24 hours' notice for cancellations. Shorter notice may incur a fee. Specifics are confirmed at booking.

How do I get started?

Send me an email at ann@annpurves.com telling me a little about what you're looking for. We'll arrange an introductory chat to talk through how I work and whether it feels like a good fit. There's no obligation.

Still have a question?

I'm happy to talk anything through before you decide.
